American Mirrors
Zach’s paintings are mirrors. He sees them as movements for self reflection. They are minimal in shape and color to give the never ending internal dialogue a place to rest and focus. Although the colors have changed throughout the years this moment of peace and quiet has always been the central focus of his work.
For American Mirrors the works are made from large deconstructed flags instead of canvas. This is not a political statement only a suggested direction for dialogue between parties of thought. The American flag is and has always been a forceful symbol, the black veil covers a fraction of the icon to remove the viewer from their direct relationship with it. Severing personal feelings and shredding the flag is meant to advocate for empathy.
